Chili's

I hate to have to say it but I've visited the Canary Wharf branch of Chili's three times now and the food has been distinctly mediocre on each occasion. This is a shame as at first glance Chili's appears to offer so much. The fresh, bright and just a little whacky decor brings to mind the typical American restaurant portrayed on film and TV and the staff are always unfailingly welcoming, cheerful and attentive.

Unfortunately the decor and efforts of the staff are let down by the awful quality of the food. I don't know if the chef has a problem preparing pasta or if I have simply been unlucky. On my first visit I tried the vegetarian pasta dish which was simply dreadful. The pasta had obviously been cooked, left to stand and then reheated - the penne tubes had hardened at the edges and the cream sauce was full of lumps. More bad luck on my second visit when I tried the shrimp alfredo. Again the same problem with the pasta compounded by the fact it was served with a dressing containing only half a dozen tiny prawns. I decided to give pasta a wide berth during my most recent visit and instead opted for a burger. This was a huge improvement although the meat in the burger was rather overdone. Moreover we found the shared starters - nachos, chicken wings and cheese quesadillas - whilst enjoyable didn't really bear comparison with other Tex-Mex style restaurants we have visited. On the plus side, other members of the party have enjoyed the fajitas during every visit and also praised the ribs. The bar is another positive that somewhat makes up for the indifferent food. Chili's have a huge selection - there must be at least ten different takes - of Margaritas all of which were excellent. The Cosmopolitan and Long Island Ice Team cocktails also went down very well.

In conclusion, you can go to Chili's and have a great time although this is more due to the atmosphere and excellent cocktails than the quality of the food. If you are out to celebrate with a large group of people it is fine. If you're after good quality food there are far better and less expensive places nearby.
