Salon

3.0 star(s)

Much like its sister pub, The Loft, The Salon is a vast, deco-stylish watering hole perfect for those girly nights out in the West End.
Their extensive cocktail menu is pricey, but tasty too, and on Thursdays cocktails are a mere £2. The weekday 'Seven Deadly Sins' drinks promotion is also worth a look for a cheap deal or two.
If you're feeling peckish, The Salon provides all the usual posh pub grub, including - it has to be said - one of the best burgers in Glasgow.
The venue also showcases live bands at the weekend, Tuesday salsa classes and many more promotions.
Like many Social Animal pubs across Scotland, you probably won't find an unforgettable atmosphere in The Salon, but with pretty surroundings, plentiful booze and good hearty grub, you can always just add friends and create it yourself.

The Grosvenor Cinema

The Grosvenor cinema is an intimate venue in Ashton Lane boasting two screens and showing a mixture of blockbuster and indie films. While the masses are heading for the commercial Cineworld in the city centre, seasoned film buffs get their fix at this tiny cinema. There is a fully licensed bar for those wanting a drink with their film. Even better, there are sofas available to rent at the back of the screen. Until everyone can afford a projection theatre in their own home, the Grosvenor provides little home comforts and an intimate setting for a good film.

Tchai-Ovna

Possibly Glasgow’s best kept secret, the west end Tchai Ovna is one of those places advertised by word of mouth. The tea house can be found in a lane on the corner of a lane, advertised by one single board around the block. If you do find eventually find it, you certainly won’t forget it in a hurry. Tchai Ovna’s balcony is a secluded leafy spot under a bridge over the river Kelvin; a traveler’s paradise. The furnishings, vegetarian food, specialty teas and shisha pipes on offer are more hippy than trying-to-be-hip. Tchai Ovna is laidback leisure at its best.

La Vita Pizzeria

Set in Glasgow’s city centre, this restaurant never has a quiet moment. If you’re after great food and atmosphere, La Vita may be the right kind of busy. A great place for weekend lunches, the menu is extensive, and the pasta may well be the best in the city (the ‘Nonna’ is recommended – a mishmash of multiple ingredients, and yet it works so well!). The ground level tables are parallel with huge windows, opened on pleasant summer days. A nice touch for diners, although the temptation for passers-by to grab pizza and run must be tempting with food that good!

Balbir's

It’s official; curry has gone posh these days, and upmarket Indian restaurants like Balbir’s are offering more than your average tikka masala. The tandoori salmon deserves a special mention, and as with lots of items on the menu, can be ordered as an ample sized starter or as a main course. The waiters at Balbir’s are famed for their hands on approach to service; asking guests preferences before recommending complementary dishes. Balbir’s makes for an interesting dining experience, with the opportunity to try new and healthier Indian delights in elegant surroundings; definitely worth a visit for that special occasion.

The Arches

The Arches is a clubber’s paradise, and a DJ’s as well.

Voted one of the top clubs in the world in DJ Magazine for years, the venue has reached legendary status locally, nationally, and internationally.

The club is an amazing sight, situated in the cavernous archways underneath Central Station, and great sound and lighting add to a highly charged atmosphere.

Highlights include the monthly dance night Pressure, and of course Wednesday night’s Octopussy complete with Jacuzzi and wedding chapel.

Forget student nights and gimmicky venues; the Arches is the number one place for a truly hedonistic clubbing experience.

The Loft Bar & Restaurant

Sometimes the sign of a good pub night is simply the chance to chat to your nearest and dearest without the rest of the world listening in. The Loft, situated above the cobbled street of Ashton Lane, offers such a place.

The bar is huge and the tables are spaced out to create intimate little groups. You might not make friends with the table next to you (unless you can shout that far) but you’ll be able to hear all gossip without interruption.

The Loft provides an impressive assortment of cocktails, making it the perfect after-work meeting place.

The Bunker Bar

Ever wondered why some people can coolly respond to the mention of a band with ‘I saw the lead singer DJ…’? It’s because they’ve been to Bunker.

The basement bar is typical of Glasgow; trendy, brimming with skinny-jeans-clad students and professionals at weekends. The attraction lies in the DJ sets by guests from all musical walks of life. Supergrass, the Fratellis; Bunker has seen many a celebrity charm the Glasgow crowd.

The staff are generally friendly, and the place is packed on weekends. This is the perfect pre-club bar, within walking distance to the best of the city centre.

Did I mention £2.50 cocktails? At the weekend?
You really can't beat a Bunker Fizz to kickstart your night!

Arta

Arta’s doorway may be tiny, but at the end of that tiny corridor is a complex offering the best looking bar in Glasgow.

The ground floor room is styled to look like an old-world Mediterranean villa, with wrought-iron chairs, marble fireplaces and statues, which make a night out feel a bit more opulent. The bar offers a range of wines and beers as well as enormous cocktails (great for sharing) accompanied by Latin beats and the odd salsa dancer (there are lessons every Tuesday night).

A night in Arta is a little bit different, and guaranteed to make you feel gloriously extravagant.

The Polo Lounge

4.0 star(s)

One of Glasgow’s best gay clubs, Polo is a great venue for gay clubbers and their friends in search of a fun night.

An old Victorian building, the ground floor has two bars, one open-planned with a lounge area and the other in the corner of a twisting corridor-like space with fireplace and cosy sofas, where the cocktail menu is huge and everything tastes incredible. It's easy to get lost in here, but with a drink that good, and a friendly crowd, why wouldn't you want to?

In the basement there are two rooms, one offering the latest chart music and the other playing classic cheesy pop and dance. Polo is an easy-going place and great for a dancing night!
