Lovely italian pizzeria/cafe. Friendly staff, excellent pizzas and pasta, nice cafe-ish vibe. I highly recommend the house special, Pizza Double Espresso. The risotto is good too. And lovely cakes (bought in from Konditor and Cook or somewhere like that.) The rest of the menu isn't quite as good, but is perfectly servicable. An excellent place to spend a long boozy evening, or just to grab a snack. It's also kid-friendly during the day, if that's of interest to you (it isn't to me particularly but I know how rare it is).
I don't know what happened when the last reviewer went there (maybe the regular staff were off sick) but I went to Spices this week and it was the full Spices experience we've all known and loved. Ali, the garrulous head chef/maitre d', was still in place, as was the fantastic food. As usual, we stuffed our faces with the nicest Indian food central London has to offer; as usual we spent only just above £15, even though I'd eaten so much I feared for my health. Ali even gave me a free pen that lights up (I think it was mostly a gift for kids, but he's good to his regulars).
The only problem was that things are evidently quiet these days – Chapel Market has gone downhill and doesn't have the walk-by trade it used to; and the credit crunch has people eating out less. So help keep Spices alive! Go there today!
