Zen Two

Food seemed to be just average takeaway standard Chinese. Not the Japanese type food I was hoping for. Service was average the day I was in. Would not go back.

Botanic Inn

I have a love hate relationship with the Bot.

On the one hand, downstairs is a pretty lively pub which is great for checking out the footie on a Saturday afternoon or for just catching up with mates, we always seem to get seats most times I have been in which is a bonus. On the other hand - I absolutely detest upstairs which is the worst kind of meat-market nightclub in town. The music is dire, in my humble opinion, and getting a drink takes forever. The same tired old 80s crap has been playing in there for as long as I can remember. Horses for courses I guess!

Despite claims to the contrary by other reviewers, I would have to disagree and say this is most definitely authentic Japanese food. My fiancé lived in Tokyo for a while a few years ago and she thinks Zen is the real deal.

The Duck and Mango main is my fave dish there but I'd advise making sure you are hungry if you try it as its very rich and filling. Portion sizes for mains are very generous and have never disappointed me (been 4 times in 18 months). Starters are also fantastic - sushi is top class as are the tempura prawns, but it's the Dragon Tail ribs that really excel.

Service is usually pretty good though at busy times possibly does slack a little, but never enough to annoy. Music and general atmosphere have been cool any time I have been in . I'd recommend checking out the cocktails if your food is taking a while to arrive.

Decor inside is astoundingly good - possibly the most interesting in Belfast - check out upstairs and you will see what I mean!

All in all, Zen is definitely a great restaurant and well worth checking out. Its not cheap though!

The Menagerie

Great to see the Menagerie is back in action. Yes it is kind of a dive and looks as if its illegal from the outside (NB I am not saying it is illegal, it definitely ISNT - just that its bizarrely located such that you have to trek across a patch of waste ground to get in!). Music and atmosphere inside are excellent, David Holmes seems to be the resident DJ which gives it a bit of cred. One of my favourite hangouts in Belfast (RIP Vicos+SkiBunny - greatly missed), long may it last this time! :)

Sakura Sushi

Have been to Sakura about 8 times in the past 18 months - simply put, its top class sushi! Not the cheapest place in town, but service has never been less than excellent, food is absolutely mouthwatering, fresh, and delicious. Sushi Bar is great fun with a bunch of friends and staff are always happy to cater for any special requests if you dont see your fave sushi on the bar.
