An independent pub, quite fitting for this backstreet backdrop. £2.50 a pint even the barman is on the booze. out the back is an beer garden fitted snugly inside the concrete jungle around the pub. The place has several odd rooms dotted about leading one around in a complex labyrinth of lounges, seated areas and finding the toilets can be somewhat of a mission.
However it serves very favourably as a traditional tavern despite the hushing of the small crowd of regulars upon entrance. Possibly one of the strangest style of pubs in the area but with such complexity comes insecurity. It doesn’t fare well as a location for entertainment - maybe instead the passing of an inconspicuous suitcase or to discuss well laid plans to take over the world…
Overall a rather uninviting very old style independent pub offering a sedated charm for those that are looking for the most quiet of drinks on a Friday evening in the middle of the city.
Dropped in a whim while touring the city. I ended up staying most of the night and felt like I had been going there for years. It was the best part of my trip. The cheese burger was great too. There must have been a 1/4lb of chedder.
I went to the Anchor Tap Pub with friends on Sunday last 4 June 2006. - I had been there before and enjoyed it very much. But on this occasion they really let me down - we didn't order anything very complicated, but the food took ages to arrive even though the pub wasn't very busy, and all the hot food was cold. Another couple there were asking for a refund for their lukewarm food. I do hope that standards improve in the very near future, as I used to like this venue.
Love this place! Free roast potatoes and cocktails during the quiz sold me!! For hangovers The Vic is the perfect antidote - newspapers, football, masses of food - I live here at the weekends.
Since this pub changed hands and had its re-fit, it has become my favourite pub in the area. The food is wicked - massive sturday all-day brunch and Sunday roasts which are great for a hangover with the papers, Sky TV showing all the sport, real ales, a non-smoking section, sofas & the bar staff were very friendly and welcoming.
