Welcome to Nottingham!

Ehups me ducks

Hello my fellow Notts folk!

I’m Sophs and I’ve just been appointed editor@nottingham :) You may have already spotted me around the site with my lovely (some may say tongue in cheek) reviews of Nottingham (don’t worry I love my hometown really).

This is the official notts ed page but you may notice that I also have a personal one, which you must check out for places to miss and destinations you have to hit!

If you wear the Nottingham badge with honour, are really into Robin Hood or just really love the city (tell me why so we can try and keep Nottingham out of any worse places to live lists) then feel as free as a bird to add me as a friend. Or send me some gorgeous pictures and let me in the gossip by e-mailing me: sophie@myvillage.co.uk

Hope you’re all loving the site as much as I am!

Love Sophs xXx

Let’s get something straight here - I despise musicals! You name one and I’ll hate it – Moulin Rouge is enough to bring me out in a rash and don’t even get me started on Mama Mia! Even the X-Factor drives me up the wall. Yet there was something different about Bluebird.

Despite being 99% music there was something that set it apart, and it took me a while to put my finger on it – then it hit me. Bluebird lacks the annoying overly enthusiastic people singing and dancing along to the sounds of “Wildcats” or whatever the topic a ray of sunshine has shone upon. Instead the story pulls on the heartstrings as it moves through love, loss and hope, through the eyes of a young nurse in London’s blitz. The musical penned by Mapperley resident, Gareth Dicks captivates the audience with Roberta Jones’ heartbreak when her child is evacuated and her husband goes off to war, and then sees her falling in love with an American solider in her care.

Not only is the story historically correct but its characterised by the use of audio and film clips which mark certain time frames of World War II. However, what impressed me most was how competent the young cast were (they were aged 8-16). Particular shining stars were Grace Meredith (Roberta Jones) and the youngest cast member, Jess Helling (Beth Jones) – and her adorable teddy bear! Although my dad loved the Spitfires (Lydia Costello, Siobhan Duplock and Kaileigh Waite) for their soulful voices!

Although one member of was the spitting image of Macaulay Culkin (in fact he should seriously consider becoming his double) Bluebird offered an alternative to a Saturday night drinking on the town. Catch it next Saturday (6th of December) at University of Bedford Theatre or await the professional CD that should be on sale next year in Dress Circle (57-59 Monmouth Street, London), which will feature the voice of Henry Luxemburg. You know Toby in Hollyoaks - the serial killer that went after blondes - yes, that’s the lad that advertises carpets now. Personally I think its certainly worth a listen just for him…

Word of the wise for you – don’t wear your best shoes! Or even new shoes – on fact pick shoes that you’re about to throw away!

With goodness knows how many years worth of cigarette ash, chewing gum, spilled alcohol and vomit covering the floors you will have to be careful not to stand in one place too long – you’ll find that you will be stuck there. An added delight is finding that your shoes (and feet…and legs) are pitch black at the end of the night (even after years in Nottingham I am unaware what this mysterious black plague actually is or how it grows).

So why visit? Well for the true Indie/Rock and roll experience of course! Rock City has stood for over twenty five years and has played host to huge headlining artists - The Killers, Queens of Stone Age and Dirty Pretty Things, are just three names that have strummed their guitars to the delight of the venue’s intimate audience.

Of course all the gigs allow standing room only – so best keep your feet moving then!

What’s in a name? Well in the case of Fashion it means walls cluttered with the faces of Moss and Campbell, and customers who spend the country’s national debt in Flannels. However, behind this rather vulgar exterior lies a designer treat that everyone can afford.

As with any haute couture collection the attention lies in the detail – delicious fruit to favour your water and gorgeous garnishes, put Fashion above other competitors on the High Street.

However, every designer outfit comes at a price and this made to measure experience doesn’t come cheap, but it won’t break the bank either - think Moschino’s “Cheap and Chic” collection rather than Chanel’s haute couture.

Closed down! A rough pup venue although i will miss the ladies only bar. However, i bid a fond farewell to the metal detectors and bar folks with "vip" lists.

Yeah some of the shops did the 2.5% Atleast you've gotten him something, and after the way he's behaved he should be thankful for that. Although I think hearing your mum tell him how she's sick of him looking like a tramp, might be kinda funny.

Definately looking forward to seeing it once you upload it.

What else can I do to publicise this event to the other members?

Thanks,

Lol I like the no-smoking one, especially when you're not a smoker. Atleast you know you have atleast one resolution you can hit :D

I have loads of resolutions, like keep fit, get more writing jobs, write a novel, do a degree, try and be the best wife I can be, generally lead a better lifestyle and see more of my friends. LOADS OF RESOLUTIONS.

Did you say your magazine is going national?

GRRR, she sounds awful. I can't stand people like that. And the worst thing is, I bet your brother expects you to be nice to her because they're together?

Yeah I'm hoping the writing will really start to take off next year, as that's what I'll be putting all my energy into. I've got so many things I want to do next year.

Have you got any new year's resolutions?

Sounds like your brother and his gf have a really good relationship....ah well he might realise this when they move in together.

Yeah it's a really horrible job, but just have to deal lol. Gotta do what you gotta do.

You're so lucky you're doing something you really like. I'm so envious lol. xxx

OMG your boss from the lawfirm sounds like a Bitch!! Bet you're glad you aren't there anymore.

I'm working in market research, and if there's any black mark against my name, that would be it. But it gives me time to focus on my writing. And that's what I really want to do, but I need the money coming in aswell.

OMG I can't believe your brother spent that much on one item...like you said, be sensible and buy in the sales..although maybe that wouldn't impress his gf very much? Give him a hug on xmas day and say that your present to him, is your ever-lasting sisterly love, I'm sure he'd love that lol.
At 11:05am on 25 November 2008, editor@norwich said…
I know, total lack of christmassy-film goodness!! Maybe we should make a myvillage one... :D

Your brother sounds like hard work. Like you said, maybe when he moves, he'll get a bit of a reality check. It might do him some good, ya never know. Maybe you could look on the internet for something that would be a good xmas present for him.

I got my husband an alarm clock, with a top that spins off, and doesn't stop beeping till you put it back. He has real trouble getting out of bed..although I think that when he moves here, I'm going to suffer for it as I'm betting he'll bring it with him, just to make me suffer. Lol

Writing work is going ok, other work sucks, but that's just because I hate that job...but like the fact that it gives me the freedom to do what I need to ya know? The magazine sounds like it's going really well. I feel excited for you lol
