Leeds is such a vibrant city jam packed with crazy night life, arts and crafts
I stumbled into The Wren’s on a Sunday afternoon after scraping myself from the hole in my bed. Seeing the welcoming sign ‘Sunday Lunch served from 12-5’ I stepped into the incredibly beautiful pub. It was my first visit and I was surprised that at how big the pub really is: sitting on a corner it hides three spacious rooms each with different décor in each but all filled with dark wooden furniture, wall lamps, framed country prints and crazy wallpaper.
The Sunday dinner warm delicious, a little slow to come but a good portion and lots of flavour and while I was ordering the barmaid seemed to genuinely care about me and my order, which with 2 pork roasts, 1 pint and 1 orange juice – came to only £15.35!
The Wren’s Hotel has a fantastic range of cask-ales, but at 7.3% watch out for Old Rosie! I know a fair few people to get more than squiffy from it.
Throughout my visit the music was excellent and at a friendly volume. I heard The Clash, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, The Animals and MC5. The Wren’s Hotel was a fantastic hangover cure – better than any paracetamol for my achy head!
Welcome to the evolution!
MOJO introduced their new whiskey Monkey Shoulder on the 2.06.09 in classic MOJO style: Fantastic menus, sweets for all and incredibly good music.
Not being a whiskey drinker I was a little worried but immediately felt relieved when I saw the promotional menus: with photos of tonight’s cocktails and tantalising descriptions, MOJO proves once again that they know what the customer wants.
With free drink tokens available at the door, friendly staff and bowls of sweets of the table it was just what I needed to relax after a dull day at the office.
There were 4 cocktails and a non-alcoholic drink available called Driven By a Monkey which was refreshing with a splash of apple juice and ginger beer and mint – a delicious treat for all the parched rockers.
My favourite cocktail was the Monkey Shake which was gentle like a milkshake with a strong banana taste. I also tried the warm and tangy Ginger Monkey, and Monkey Fig Sour which- to me - was really strong. By the end of the night I was reasonably sozzled, melting into the brilliant décor and fifties Soul and Rock’n’Roll dancing through my ears.
What’s left to say? Another fantastic night, I definitely recommend MOJO.
The Primrose Pub sits on the edge of quite a busy road, on the outskirts of ‘Little London’. First impression is that you may encounter a bit of trouble, so put your friendly face on and brave it as it will turn out to be just paranoia.
I was there to see one of The Primroses’ infamous gigs which they have been putting on for years with an impressive history of up and coming and obscure live and a good variety of music styles complete a nice sound system, better than most pub gigs.
The bar staff turned out to be quite friendly and accommodating even though there is a clear divide: one room for locals and another for the live music.
The music room’s ceiling is covered with the posters of the past giving you a real curiosity about the pubs history and you can see the incredible back catalogue of live bands The Primrose has supported over the years.
I got served within 30 seconds and fell in love with the charm of the pub – the ceiling fans, dated décor and the spacious loos.
This pub is not for everyone and I would only recommend it for dirty music lovers or nearby locals. It’s well priced - £2:50 for a pint of Fosters and cans of Red Stripe for £2, has easy access and outdoor seating. Most importantly for me: it lives up to its reputation for good live shows. I will definitely be returning, but wont be bringing any faint hearted friends along.
