Welcome to Brighton

An introduction

Hello and welcome to the Brighton pages.

Brighton needs no introduction (although Hove actually, might) The city is renown for being fun, funky and free spirited. You would be hard pushed not to find something you didn't like. The city is packed with independent shops, boutiques, clubs, pubs and more. Come summer time, the city is packed with tourists and drunken people basking in the sun. Did I forget to mention that Brighton is by the sea...

If you need to get out of the hustle and bustle, I highly recommend a walk along the South Downs. A few minutes by bus or car (or if you're green like many Brightonians - by bike) it doesn't take that long to find a stunning stretch of coast line. This line of hills running from Winchester to Eastbourne are designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for good reason.

Back in Funky Town, it's not that difficult to spot the odd celeb here or there. It depends on how good their disguise is. Banksy is notoriously difficult to spot, but has definitely left his mark, while Chris Eubank couldn't blend in if he tried. Nick Cave is rumored to live in the deepest depths of Hove actually. As for Fatboy Slim - well, what can I say? I, myself saw Alex James, ex-bassist of Blur, now renown cheese maker, ambling around the Corn Exchange during Brighton Fringe.

And I, myself, is otherwise known as Sarah, the editor of named page. I love Brighton for its shops, festivals, kookiness, art, liberal thinking - but mainly for its shops. I have been known to stray out of the area and write about Eastbourne. If you want to live 'til you're 80, then Eastbourne is where it's at.

With so much happening, I need your help to update these pages. Fill me in with any gossip on the streets, reviews on anything and everything and while you're at it, why don't you post some pictures? Email me on: sarah@myvillage.co.uk and make Brighton your village.

It looks bigger than it actually is, and feels like another chain pub - a bit soulless. Service is friendly, and the prices won't break the bank - but that's if you're used to Brighton prices. The doors to the toilets look like bookcases which make for interesting decor. Personally, there are better and more interesting pubs in Brighton. Watch out for the stairs - it is for staff only.

Another standard Italian which is always busy. In a good location to the Laines, I have been here with friends for both lunch and dinner (although not on the same day) Not as big as Donatello, tables are cramped together, but the food is usually good. Prices are reasonable too as are the portions.

Donatello is in an excellent position, right in the heart of the Laines. I would love to say the same about their food. The standard of the food has slipped from good to just average. The prices won't break the bank, but there are plenty of restaurants in Brighton which I would prefer to go to. It is a large restaurant and would suit a party. I use Donatello as a stand-by if I can't find any where else to go.

Blink and you might miss it. Nestled between the shoe shop on the corner and the café, is a green doorway leading upstairs to a very studenty hangout. The walls are papered with the latest events, and the menu is scribbled on the blackboard above the counter. Veggies and vegans are catered for. After all, this is Brighton. Typical grub consists of egg and chips, bacon buttie and other such fayre. The prices are reasonable, and the potions are big, however the place is small. If you are looking for somewhere up market and chic, this is not the place for you. But, if you’re looking for something unpretentious and to cure that hangover, this is right up your alley.

Formally know as the Zap Club, Digital tends to get packed. It is a great venue with an excellent soundsystem, so if you like you music lound and pumping - this is the place for you. The likes of Kissy Sell Out, Goldie and DJ Yoda will be spinning the decks of Digital. A great place to go - just watch out you don't p*** off the bouncers.

Cold, ah I know it well right now...we're sitting at 2 degrees at present and it's to drop to at least -2 tonight...how's the weather down there? Also freezing your tootsicles off?

Hope the new job is going well! I'm still slaving away on my postgrad course...no real jobs to speak of as yet :P

Roll on Christmas though, it's the only way to justify having to put up with this cold! x

Ah, can't believe I'm just getting back to replying, sorry - bit of a bad week!

Fashion Week was immense though, couldn't have been better :)

Hope all is well!

The statue with a cone on his head is a legend, I have written a feature on it somewhere so I'm hoping you can read the full history soon :P He's missing his cone right now but rest assured some Glasgow punter'll have it back up by Christmas. It's a 20 year long tradition! :D

Loving the Brighton pics btw...I wanna be beside the seaside!
