food pretty good, the prawn crystal dumplings are great. the sushi and sashimi are decent. Some interesting fish choices as well. service brisk, inobtrusive and fairly friendly. I liked it: some of the reviews seem overly negative - its not absolutely amazing, but is pretty good value: serves some quality, interesting food.
Friendly, simple, and inexpensive. The food is unremarkable but tasty, and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Well worth a visit.
I usually approach pan-asian restaurants with slight trepidation, having experienced several that serve a massive range of profound mediocrity in an effort to appeal to every possible taste. Happily, Tampopo is not one of these, though the range of different cuisines is impressive, they intermingle happily, and the relatively modest selection of dishes are produced largely to a very high standard. The ingredients are clearly thoughtfully sourced, and the use of fragrant, fresh herbs such as thai basil in the thai dishes is fantastic.
The green papaya salad is a slight let down, being rather peanut heavy and not particularly spicy, which made it rather cloying, but this was probably the only thing i have had there which wasn't excellent. The Vietnamese Pho is great, and the Pad Krapow packs a punch as well as a real depth of flavour.
They do a brilliant student discount as well, so it's really good value (even without the discount).
Essentiallly, a more interesting, better executed wagamama.
A noisy buzzing, friendly atmosphere does not detract from the high quality of the food. The setting underneath the train station is bizzarre to say the least.
The sushi is excellent, despite the presentation being slightly hit and miss; the rolls can be somewhat crumbly, and the rice not quite perfect, but the tastes are superb. The sashimi was all fantastic, particularly the turbot. Recommended.
