Expecting the worst ... especially after scandal with Trading Standards from the Borough that banged the place to rights for mis-advertising the menu as "organic". They have now substituted "Julie's" for the offending organic ie. lamb, chicken ... however surprisingly "Julie" done good and it was delicious, followed by a proper crumble with decent custard - totally excellent in a very non-Heston Blumenthal way ... although enthusiastic exploration of the cocktail menu resulted in a eye-watering bill.
The Globe is the stuff of legend! I don't believe it's changed in 20 years ... or even been cleaned come to that. Back then there were real shabeens in Notting Hill and it wasn't that extraordinary - but now it's a real throw-back. It's tough to remember real facts or proper detail when it comes to this place. As any regular will know it's visited at a stage in the evening when memories become hazy ... did that actually happen?? ... or did I dream it?? In the case of The Globe - likelihood is, it did really happen! It's that kind of a place.
Very cosy and candlelit vibe to this place. It's family run although I'm not sure I notice many of the male side of the family - not that I'm complaining! This place ticks a lot of boxes: friendly, atmospheric, authentic, good value.
This place is quintessentially notting hill and maybe most memorable for it's name - like something out of The Wind in the Willows. Bar downstairs food upstairs - it's not bad in the usual gastro way. Service is a bit slow and very relaxed ... or asleep ... or maybe taking a fag break.
The restaurant is on two floors - upstairs being a tad more formal, with downstairs as a brasserie that doesn't take bookings. Bumkin's mission is to "country-fy" with emphasis on traditional English food such as game, but this is escapable if one is not the mood. Food is solid and reliable on both floors, with good fresh ingredients that they don't mess about or over embellish. Again every dish on the menu is easily understood without a degree in cordon bleu, or wild gesticulations from a gay waiter. It's frequented by a local notting hill crowd, and service is very friendly and engaging. They now have one in Fulham as well.
