I think you will find that SAIGON is in Vietnam, not Thailand! There is a dearth of Vietnamese restaurants in central London - I had enjoyed the relaxed restos of Dalston and even in Camden. It is a true delight for Vietnam to come West and I think everyone should try it! Thai, though lovely, has been done to death. Vietnamese cuisine is full of fresh, raw herbs such as mint and coriander accompaniments and this resto does not disappoint. The interior is smart and the staff are very warm and friendly. The deep fried soft shell crab is the best starter ever. Main courses are expertly executed and presented. I like the Bun Thit - lemon grass pork barbequed and served on vermicelli with Nam Choc sauce. MMM!
I can't believe I'm the first to review this gem of a local resto. The sushi is spanking fresh but one of the great draws for me is the charcoal grill for the Japanese version of BBQ. You can opt for their set menu but the a la carte is much more fun. The ox tongue on skewers with sea salt is a tasty delight. And the delicately deep fried oysters - I defy anyone who can say they don't like oysters after they've tried these! You can still taste the sea in them but the crunchy coating is a very pleasing contrast to the juicy meat. And I still get my raw fish fix at the same time.
We used to envy our north London friends having St John's in Archway, now their ex-Head chef has opened up his own gaff in Chiswick! It was with much excitment that our charming waitress replied to our question about what was in the fish stew that she said that she had just witnessed its delivery about two hours ago. Although she did not know all the ingredients that went in, scallops were definitely involved - and that was enough for me. We deliberated chose a mix from the menu with sampling each other's dishes in mind. My roasted grouse was delicious in a rich sauce and the fish stew was indeed a spankingly fresh delight. Our food was cooked to order and the wine list is a carefully chosen one. Go now!
Took a walk down the river and went a little further than usual when I discovered this! It was a Monday night (bank holiday) and what really grabbed me was the Monday film night. Our evening's selection was "Best In Show" a mockumentary featuring various comic American character actors. We settled down in the film room, on sofas with steak and chip dinners and the lights dimmed. Its a lot more fun than staying in watching the box, the meals are good and hearty and the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious. I will be back...
