Prima Pizza Pasta, Newcastle
Prima Pizza Pasta

I used to live on the Quayside and visited this place regularly. What some of the reviews say about the antipasto are right - this isn't a good option. Also, the service is brusque, but I quite like that. The front room is reasonably pleasant, nothing remarkable, but usually busy and noisy. The back room is somehow hollowed out of the railway bridge, which makes it a bit different, but it actually feels like you're eating in a cellar, and I prefer the front. However, what I like about Prima is that it's quick, cheap, and has some of the best pizza in town. Pizza di Parma is especially good, in my view. I also had a chicken main here once - it was simple, tasty, and very good.

I hosted a leaving party here for about 30 friends on a Friday night in September. I thought it was great: the space is nice, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the DJ played good a mix of tunes at an appropriate volume, gradually increasing it as the club filled up with ordinary punters. Highly recommended.

I can't say I was ever a regular at this place but it was close to where I used to live and I drank there a few times. Architecturally, the pub has bags of character and if it was located anywhere else it would probably be fully converted into an Olde Worlde English theme pub rammed with American tourists. As it is, it is simply a regular boozer in an historic building, which gets moderately full but not (unlike the nearby Crown Posada) packed. Actually I was always surprised at how easy it was to get a seat in there and have a good chat - perhaps they have a less extensive selection of beer?

I had Sunday brunch here with my wife a few months ago and was greatly impressed. In it previous incarnation the place was fitted out with anodyne pine fixtures and furniture, and I believe it was possible to order three courses all with a Newcastle Brown Ale theme. Now the place is much funkier and the food vastly improved. Particularly memorable was a plate of huge Irish oysters which rivalled in quality those I've had anywhere. Great stuff!

I've only eaten here once, about 9 months ago. The space is very pleasant, the service was charming - although to be honest, I had come to share a meal with my wife, not talk to the waiter - and the food good. It wasn't, however, excellent. If I remember rightly, some of its more ambitious creations (my starter) didn't really come off, and the simpler things (a steak) were done well, but no better than I could have cooked at home. For the price, I was expecting a bit more.
