Oh, say can you see...

I attended the opening night of this exhibition in Shoreditch last Thursday, which was held in a flat above the underwear shop Bordellos. The work on the walls was immediately dramatic to look at, pretty and grotesque in some pieces. The images were created from junk mail photographs of food and people, I find this process to have weight in the fact it is taking objects that are really not desired but end up in our houses anyway, which may indeed spin a full circle. These objects are transformed into a different view, sometimes quite chaotic and unsettling. When looking at a pavement of smiles I am reminded of a vision of hell, decapitated heads, limbs forming a landscape, all whilst being animated in life. It raises many questions about how much visual information we are bombarded with in our every day lives, and also the link between food photography and desire. I am sure there are many more questions to raise, the images are too jarring to sit comfortably on the fence. Some of the pieces allude to a tranquility of space and nature which perhaps isn’t felt when in the middle of an image and advertisement world. I would recommend this exhibition to anyone who likes conversation of politics in art as well as those unhappy with junk mail.
