Kid British - 28th of March 2009
Although, I rather stupidly didn’t wear steel capped boots for an evening out in Rock City (my crushed toes are still making me regret that decision) - I arrived ready to rock out with Kid British.
At first glance the four lads made a rather odd bunch – a mish mash of trilby hats and Fred Perry polo shirts, but nevertheless they seemed excited to be there and really interacted with the crowd.
Despite a tiny gathering, in fact so much so, that I could have done cartwheels on the lower ground...this soon changed when The Enemy was on - I was lucky I had the space to breathe. However, its quality rather then quantity and Kid Britain certainly knew how to rock out a room. With an Indie style, slightly electro edge, these lads are a breath of fresh air and are certainly a band to watch with an eagle eye this year.
Needless to say the obvious crowd pleasers were their version of the Madness classic ‘Our House’. With only the original chorus, the tune was forever rid of its baggy trouser image. Another track to watch out for is their upcoming single “Sunny Days” (out April 20th) - the lyrics will remain implanted in your head for (sunny, rainy, windy) days to come.
When i let my mind drift back to Templars i remember the drinking haze of my youth, the ill faded Number 8's (or was it 10's), drum and bass music and a lot of stairs. Templars provided us with something crucial - entry without showing any identification. Brilliant for sneaking my best friend in who had yet to celebrate her eighteen birthday.
Of course i'm not suggesting that Templars is like how it used to be - especially now with the government's crack down on underage drinking. So don't try sneaking in now! However, it does seem a haven for a young audience, therefore making it a hot spot for the young but for those young at heart! Even if you are only twenty you will have out grown this bar.
I may have love for you if you were born in the eighties but it doesn't mean that i have to love the decade's music (although they mainly seem to play Micheal Jackon's "Thriller" here) - or a club dedicated to the era either!
A warning for the slightly confused souls out there or for anyone that enjoys having a few too many drinks before busting a move - the club boosts a revolving dance floor - i got quite scared when i got span right round (like a record, baby) quite unexpectedly!
Walking into this pub is like stepping back in time. What with patterned carpets, dim lighting and the mainly male population hoovering around the darts board like hungry wolves.
The Meadow Covert is spilt into two sections - one that looks like a working mens club whilst the other reminds me of Coronation's Street's infamous pub "The Rovers Return". In fact the Rovers, i mean The Meadow Covert reminds me of a pub that i used to live opposite to in my student days. If you dared to walk up to the bar and asked for anything other than a pint, the barman would look at you like you had just stepped off Mars.
Not a place for any girlie girls - unless you're really into darts.
Children running through the restaurant screaming and food that looks like its been lingering around the kitchen for the past week isn't my idea of a great meal (believe me i'm the type of lass that would be happy with a pizza - not fine dining) in fact McDonalds is more relaxing.
On a positive note the pub boosts an extremely green beer garden - its just a shame its located right next to the Nottingham Knight roundabout. So instead of a calm, quiet drink, its fumes and engine noise!

Just to let you know that I'm standing down as Brighton Editor as my job has taken over my life! But I'll still be around doing stuff on here.
You sound like you're pretty busy yourself with all your writing to. How is everything going for you in that department?

I think a lot of people have been to Barcelona. My mate has been teaching English there for the past 4 years now. She loves it.
Keep up with sending me all those venue changes, it is making keeping up with everything much easier.
All the best,
Tom
