Its been a while between visits. I ate here in 1974 and a couple of weeks ago. The first experience was mindblowing, Indian restaurants were nt as popular and the Rajdoot was upmarket and very exotic. It did not disappoint on my return visit. It is not a run of the mill curry house, it is gourmet Indian food-something that is returning to our high streets in increasing numbers. I m would not deride more ordinary Indian restaurants, they provide good food at a reasonable price. Places like the Rajdoot are for the memorable occasions where you value quality rather than quantity.
I ve been to Eds Diner on the Kings Road in Chelsea and to th Ok Diner chain in the midlands and Eddies compares reasonably favourably. It may be modelled on Eds Diner and maybe its not as hip but its also not as crammed as Eds. Popular doesnt have to mean overfilled to a point of discomfort! Being in Cardiff Bay means that its a bit pricey for what it is but location, location, location! The OK Diner chain is great, in specially imported silver dining 'trailers', authentically American but sited on busy A roads not in the tourist spot of Cardiff Bay! Eddies does what it says on the tin, in a fantastic location!
All the usual tex mex favourites. Quality was fine and, for London, the prices were ok. A place to eat when hungry and no time to look any further but not a place to impress!
I returned to the Chinese Chef after a break of a couple of years. It had been a bit basic in terms of decor but the compensation had always been the quality and quantity of the food. To me, it was legendary.
Sadly, I found that it is not the place that it was. It might have been a bad night with a replacement chef but the choice on offer suffered from not being regularly topped up and when it arrived it was not properly cooked. I stopped eating not because I was full but because the food was of a poor standard. I was disappointed.
It needs to buck up its quality standards or people will drift away, the buffet concept is not as unique as it was a few years ago. I certainly intend to try others in the area rather than take the chance at The Chinese Chef.
