Welcome to Glasgow!

Life in the city according to a Glasgow Girl...

Hello, hiya, alright, and howsitgaun?

I'm Gillian, your official MyVillage editor@glasgow...

I'm here to provide you with the latest news, reviews and info about Glasgow. Something going on in your area? The latest band/club night/hootnanny in town needing a shout out? Got a picture of the city worthy of publishing? Drop me an email at gillian@myvillage.co.uk and I'll give you a mention! Remember, there's no better publicity than from a Glasgow Girl herself!

Like you guys, I also have a personal contributor's page, so if you feel like taking a gander at myself and friends looking daft on occasion in our lovely city, have a look!

For those out there who are looking for a bit more info about things to see and do, below are some articles I've written for MyVillage in the past - a bit of a Glasgow's hottest in my (I'd like to think esteemed) opinion...
Club Noir
Tina Warren, Glasgow's Premier Burlesque Showgirl
The Arts Scene
Burns Night

Enjoy the site, make it your own with a personal profile (all friends with an appreciation for my city welcome!), and keep reviewing the hotspots of Glasgow.

We're one of Lonely Planet's top 10 cities in the world, so let's show the rest of the island what we're made of :)

Sunshine, samba and...Glasgow?

June 14 marked the opening parade for the West End festival, and, despite the weatherman (or google weather) warning us of impending rain, the sun shone down on mardi gras dancers, Chinese dragons and Glasgow revellers alike throughout the day. Your intrepid Glasgow editor was on the case, obviously for the benefit of all you myvillagers (selfless, dedicated editor that I am, and nothing to do with enjoying the festivities). The parade is always a spectacle to behold; it's not often you'll find… Continue

Having your £5 pasta lunch and eating it too...

I KNOW, I know, it's been a while since your (normally) dedicated Glasgow editor has posted a blog. I wish I could say that it was because I've been too busy having the time of my life in Glasgow. I wish I could say that I've been travelling the Weegie streets in style, painting them red, yellow, pea green with purple spots...any colour really. Unfortunately, as well as being swamped with more workloads of a journalistic nature than ever before, I've also been suffering from that unfortunate tur… Continue

Birthday pitfalls

Birthday nights out are a veritable minefield these days. Overlooking the throwing together of different groups of friends, the new 'gentleman caller' (yes, one met at last month's Club Noir...your Glasgow Editor is a little more fickle than she claims) meeting them all at once (luckily avoided as a result of work commitments...thank you lord), and the huge issue of what to wear, there is one problem that remains the bain of every birthday girl or boy's existence. I like to imagine that back in… Continue

A Glasgow Girl's Reflections on Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day. It’s a curse no matter what really, isn’t it? Yes, February 14th rolls around once again and whether single or attached I’m tempted to flee Glasgow for clearer waters. Those V-Day crazies take hold of everyone, from soppy loved-up types to the “Valentine’s is just a load of commercial rubbish” crusaders. Somehow, regardless of our stance, we all have an agenda to our often loudly expressed opinions on the subject. A spat with that special someone over the lack of thought in a gi… Continue

Glasgow Fashion Week - Coming Soon!

London, Paris, New York, Milan and…Glasgow? Scotland’s largest city may not spring to mind when it comes to the words ‘fashion week’. But this will change on the 19th of September as Glasgow Fashion Week transforms the trendy Merchant City into a lavish display of costume and couture. Scotland’s biggest fashion event began in 2006, and each year has showcased more work from local and international designers, established labels and those tipped for the top. The clothes range from Scottish-inspire… Continue

Salon, Glasgow
Salon

Much like its sister pub, The Loft, The Salon is a vast, deco-stylish watering hole perfect for those girly nights out in the West End.
Their extensive cocktail menu is pricey, but tasty too, and on Thursdays cocktails are a mere £2. The weekday 'Seven Deadly Sins' drinks promotion is also worth a look for a cheap deal or two.
If you're feeling peckish, The Salon provides all the usual posh pub grub, including - it has to be said - one of the best burgers in Glasgow.
The venue also showcases live bands at the weekend, Tuesday salsa classes and many more promotions.
Like many Social Animal pubs across Scotland, you probably won't find an unforgettable atmosphere in The Salon, but with pretty surroundings, plentiful booze and good hearty grub, you can always just add friends and create it yourself.

Tchai-Ovna, Glasgow
Tchai-Ovna

Possibly Glasgow’s best kept secret, the west end Tchai Ovna is one of those places advertised by word of mouth. The tea house can be found in a lane on the corner of a lane, advertised by one single board around the block. If you do find eventually find it, you certainly won’t forget it in a hurry. Tchai Ovna’s balcony is a secluded leafy spot under a bridge over the river Kelvin; a traveler’s paradise. The furnishings, vegetarian food, specialty teas and shisha pipes on offer are more hippy than trying-to-be-hip. Tchai Ovna is laidback leisure at its best.

The Grosvenor Cinema

2 Review(s)

The Grosvenor cinema is an intimate venue in Ashton Lane boasting two screens and showing a mixture of blockbuster and indie films. While the masses are heading for the commercial Cineworld in the city centre, seasoned film buffs get their fix at this tiny cinema. There is a fully licensed bar for those wanting a drink with their film. Even better, there are sofas available to rent at the back of the screen. Until everyone can afford a projection theatre in their own home, the Grosvenor provides little home comforts and an intimate setting for a good film.

Blas

Blas, offering locally produced fare and a stunning view of Kelvingrove Museum, holds great appeal for tourists. The restaurant is also popular with the local crowd, catering to those who want a home-cooking style meal without the hefty price tag. The Wee Blas menu, with tapas-style portions, offers a chance to sample various dishes. Best of all, the main items from the menu, like the Ullapool smoked salmon, can be put on a bun for a tasty lunch option. A meal at Blas is like visiting your granny’s house – if she had a nice West End view, that is.

Set in Glasgow’s city centre, this restaurant never has a quiet moment. If you’re after great food and atmosphere, La Vita may be the right kind of busy. A great place for weekend lunches, the menu is extensive, and the pasta may well be the best in the city (the ‘Nonna’ is recommended – a mishmash of multiple ingredients, and yet it works so well!). The ground level tables are parallel with huge windows, opened on pleasant summer days. A nice touch for diners, although the temptation for passers-by to grab pizza and run must be tempting with food that good!

Helllo :) I hope you're well :) I'm great thanks :) I just googled myself (as you do) and remembered I had joined My Village so thought I should probably add some life to my page (even if it's just commenting on my favourite places). I'll write some reviews when our exams are over. I just noticed you when I clicked on Cabaret Voltaire :) You too are a fan :) It's a great place for live music :) Good to see you on here - I was about to look you up and I found you anyway :) And you've made it to editor!! Well done!!
I'll definitely pop some Glasgow reviews up too - I do love the place and strangely miss it now I'm not there so often! I'm off to the Carlton to do a review next week so there's one for the books already :)
Speak soon. xx

I love the reindeer photo. V Christmassy (if that's how you spell it)

I have to say, it's not as cold as it is up your end of the country. I hear it's been snowing. Sadly, by the time it reaches us, it doesn't lay and becomes that crappy brown slush that then ices over. It's bitter when the wind blows. We're not quite 2 degrees...yet...

Job is going great. My fav part is payday! But I am going to see if they will pay for a shorthand course. I want that 100wpm. I did my law exam a few weeks ago. Fingers cross I've passed it this time. Was gutted when I found out I failed. And good luck with the job front. I have to say, there hasn't been much for trainees down south. When do you finish?

No worries. I'm getting a bit lax myself. I've started a new job in PR, so am trying to get into a routine. Looking forward to the history of the cone! Has it come back yet? Over in Hastings, there is a statue of Queen Vic, and see alyas gets a coe on her head. I think one year, seh even had a Christmas hat. Very festive.

Thanks abotut the piccis. It's getting quite cold now, espsh when the wind blows.

Hello, hello. You're doing well on the page. I really need to get reviews up on mine! Liking the photo of the staute with the cone. I'm good thanks. Have just stared a new job in PR, so it's gone a bit mental down my end. It'll calm down by next week. And so jealous of your fashion week!
