Plymouth Ramblers Association
Fancy a bit of a ramble? Check out the The Plymouth Group of the Ramblers Association who are a large group with approaching 400 paid up members.
They have an active committee to look after the interests of the group. Walks are arranged by the members for the members and are frequently Dartmoor based or the coastal paths.
All walks are publicised on a Walks List sheet that is published and distributed three times a year.
The group recommends that all walkers have suitable insurance. Walkers should ensure that when walking they have:
* Suitable footwear and waterproof clothing
* A rucksack, suitable for carrying "eats and hot drinks" and spare clothing
* Written details of their name, address and home telephone together with their Doctors Name and contact number.
Walkers often bring their dogs along on walks. Dogs must be kept on a lead and under control if so instructed by the walk leader. Certain walks may specify "no dogs" .
Walkers make direct contact with the leader of a walk, if they want additional information on a walk. They usually operate a car share scheme for most walks whereby they meet at a location in Plymouth before making their way to the walk start location.
The Sunday walks attract the largest number of walkers and normally these are up to 10 miles in length. From time to time shorter walk are offered of 6 miles or so. These 'amble' rambles are put on for family groups and those who do not like the longer walks.
The Wednesday walks are usually longer and the pace is often significantly higher. Members of the group are encouraged to suggest walks to the walks secretary and these are included in a subsequent walks list and led by the member offering that walk.
