Devon County Show
Event

May 18-20 2006

The South West is, to many, the jewel in England's crown. With beautiful countryside, friendly people and excellent food it's no wonder that every summer thousands flock to Devon for their holidays. The Devon County Show celebrates all the things that make the South West great and every year celebrities, chefs, sportsmen and women and even royalty are among those who join in the festivities.

Each Summer 93 acres of land in Westpoint, near Exeter, are given over to the show. Tents are erected, arenas marked out and stalls put out for three days of food, drink, showmanship and much, much more. The show takes in Devon's past and present with plenty of history on offer while the present is embraced as well - this year the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, in full costume, head the line up.

Devon's agricultural heritage is at the heart of this event and good old fashioned attractions such as shepherding trials, pig of the year awards and shearing demonstrations are all on the programme. It's also food glorious food all round thanks to the many stalls selling top local produce, from award winning sausages to refreshing cider, excellent cheeses to mouthwatering local wines. In fact, so good is the food that TV's Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall is a regular visitor.

With many of us now embracing a more old fashioned way of life - shunning shipped in potatoes in favour of seasonal local produce and often even producing some of our own - the Devon County Show is reaching ever more people. This means local producers and farmers are able to drum up more custom and support while visitors are able to add to their list of places to go for good ingredients.

In addition there are plenty of things to keep everyone in the family entertained, from dog shows to pony rides, driving lessons to It's A Knockout tournaments as well as many hands on experiences to give us all a taste of rural life.
