How long has the centre been running?
22 years. Nationally Shelter has been going for 35 years.
How did you get started in this field?
I worked for Citizens Advice Bureau in Exeter. I saw the job advertised.
What do you specialise in?
Housing law and training - advising people on housing law.
What sort of people come to the centre?
Across the board. Anyone, really, witha housing problem, homeless. At the very sharp end you've got people without a roof over their heads. Or you might have a tenant getting evicted or a landlord wanting to know the law.
What do you enjoy about working in this area?
The ability to make a difference. As long as you stick with it, in the longer term you can see the results - the fruits of your labour so to speak.
If you could change one thing about the area what would it be?
More resources.
What changes have you seen since you first came to the organisation?
Changes in legislation. Exposure of bad laws, exposure of the myth that homelessness does not exist in one of the most sophisticated country's in the world.
What is the most significant event you have experienced?
There's a new law, Homeless Act 2002 which encapsulates much of what Shelter has been campaigning for; forcing councils to have proper joined up thinking.
What would you to do if you were given £10 million to invest?
Fund more caseworkers to work in Devon to finally challenge some of the bad practice in some local authorities there.
