In the first installment of a new column Eponym frontwoman Laura Proudman gives us the lowdown on life when you really are rocking it on stage...Lloyd Webber style.
I fear I am about to break a cardinal rule of Rock n Roll – in a moment of unwarranted generosity, I have agreed to sing a little ditty penned by one Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber… in public.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the frontwoman of an über-cool band should never admit to the slightest awareness of musical theatre; much less admit to knowing half of Lloyd Webber’s back catalogue by heart. Years ago, in my young naivety I was foolish enough to let slip a certain passion for Les Misérables to a few members of the Rock elite, and to this day I am forced to defend myself against a regular onslaught of mockery. Of course, I feign cool nonchalance, but deep down I am ‘le miserable’ at their derision, and make endless mental notes on the subject of scorn avoidance.
In addition to the taboo of performing a Lloyd Webber song, I am also faced with the necessity of demonstrating an impressive aptitude for Latin; yes, I am singing Pie Jesu. Will the hilarity never cease? I, the mighty rocking vocalist responsible for postmodern, political anthems and dark, poignant melodies, am poised to perform a classical, religious, Andrew Lloyd Webber penned piece in Latin!
So, to my ultimately invincible defence…Rock n Roll is all about the refusal to conform to social expectation. Surely then, by singing this little tinkling piece of prettiness, I am actually refusing to conform even to the rules of almighty Rock itself! Yes, surely I am the ultimate in rebellion!
