Stella McCartney

  • Profession: Fashion Designer
  • Place/Date of Birth: London, 13 September 1971
  • Associated with: Sir Paul McCartney

A host of stars came out for Stella’s big day on the Scottish Isle of Bute - Madonna and Guy Richie, Coldplays’ Chris Martin, Liv Tyler, Gucci boss Tom Ford, Kate Moss - as well as proud dad Sir Paul and his pregga’s plays pop wife Heather. The security is said to have been one of the tightest ever - there were probably more press on the small Scottish Isle then there were guests at the wedding - not that the assorted press got a chance to get any snaps. Only a few ingenious photographers got a few quick pics of Stella being rushed to her car - as no press were allowed on the island.

However - the locals are saying that it is the best thing that has happened to them for years - as the waiting press pack bought up all the booze, food and fags around the port - doing record and unheard of sales for the local shops and pubs!

Stella’s ’secret’ wedding? - 28/08/03
The buzz around Notting Hill based Stella McCartney’s so called secret wedding is getting stronger.

Several publications are speculating that this weekend is set to be the big one for starry-eyed Stella and her beau Alisdhair Willis. The Glasgow Evening Times, This is London, Glasgow Daily Record and British Vogue have been first to announce the intended weekend wedding, and the fact that Glasgow has been mentioned twice is not to under-estimated, as it appears they are to marry on the Scottish Isle of Bute.

The rumours started circulating after Stella was known to have visited Mount Stuart House, which is a Victorian Mansion set in a 300 acre estate. Then people noticed that the surrounding hotels were block booked and helicopter landing pads have been marked out. But the mansion management have attributed the activity to a conference of ’gas company executives’. Hmm. Pretty damn important gas execs for heli pads, surely? Stella and Alisdhair have not said a word, Sir Paul and wife Heather have flown back to Heathrow from New York, and the only comment has been from Alsidhairs dad. He said ’If it is happening this weekend you know more than we do. I know nothing about it and we would expect to be there if it was taking place.’ Well, exactly.

Stella’s smell - 27/06/03
Notting Hill based fashion designer Stella McCartney has launched her new perfume.

The designer said her scent reflected her English side - and reminded her of her late mother Linda McCartney. She told Hello magazine: "The biggest inspiration for the perfume - and my own personal goal - was to create a perfume I would want to wear." The scent is the third in Yves Saint Laurent’s new fragrance brands. The accompanying body milk and body cleanser are 95% natural as well as 15% organic.

Stella’s star guests - 16/05/03
Stella McCartney had quite a few famous friends at the launch of her new store...

Madonna, Sadie Frost, Tara Fitzgarald, Leah Wood and Sara Cox joined the designer at her Bruton Street shop. However Sir Paul and Heather had prior engagements, so couldn’t be there. That sounds a bit harsh, but when you consider Paul was actually performing in Hungary that night as part of his Back In The World tour and Heather was in America all week, you can understand! After all prior engagements to the majority of us would mean we have a hot date watching Sex in the City. The store stocks Stella’s ready-to-wear line, shoes and accessories, and is expected to house her lingerie collection and new perfume within the next few months.

Biography

Stella McCartney was born in 1972, the daughter of ex-Beatle Sir Paul and Linda McCartney. She first hit the headlines herself in 1995, when she graduated from London’s Central St Martins College of Art & Design. Her graduation show, attended by her super-famous parents, featured pals Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss modelling her clothes on the catwalk.

Unsurprisingly, the student show became front page news around the world and the entire collection was snapped up by London boutique Tokio. She launched her eponymous label the same year. Despite her new-found celebrity, McCartney had already served a long apprenticeship in fashion. At 15, she worked with Christian Lacroix on his first couture collection and later spent several years learning her craft on Savile Row. McCartney was appointed chief designer at the French couture house Chloë in March 1997. Succeeding Karl Lagerfeld in one of the most high profile posts in the industry, McCartney’s appointment was viewed by many as simply an astute publicity stunt on the part of Chloë’s owners, the Vendome group. However, her first collection for the house, shown in Paris in October 1997, quickly dispelled any doubts about her talent. Sensual and romantic, the collection teamed lacy petticoat skirts with fine tailoring and was hailed a triumph. Her delicate camisoles and Nineties updates of the Seventies trousersuit fast became the talk of the catwalk circuit.

The following season, Chloë execs proved that her efforts had not only raised the house’s profile, but had lifted its profits too. Following her mother’s death in April 1998, Stella took up her fight against the maltreatment of animals. A month later, during Fur Fashion Week, she teamed up with PeTA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - to release a video championing animal rights. In April 2000, she renewed her contract with Chloë, amid reports that she had turned down the offer of a position at rival house Gucci, because Gucci would have required her to work with leather. She may have torn up the grey carpets of her new office in Paris to make it of a parquet-floored home away from home; but, to Stella McCartney, there really is no place like it.

In fact, rather than move entirely from her beloved studio-flat in London’s W11, the Chloë designer has merely upgraded to a £695,000 white stucco, four-floor family house with a miniature roof terrace down the road. Her vibe is undeniably west London. Written in 2000
