Firstly, the Catholic priest in the Italian town they are said to have chosen for their big day is apparently refusing to marry them because the Top Gun actor is twice divorced.

And now the town mayor has said the paperwork for a civil ceremony hasn’t been completed.

The star-studded event is due to take place on November 18.

The small town of Bracciano has been teeming with paparazzi since it was reported the celebrations would take place at the luxurious Castello Odescalchi.

Bracciano priest Nicola Fiorentini is quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: "Cruise is divorced. Even if he were not, another fundamental requirement would be missing - the authorisation of the parish."

Mayor Patrizia Riccioni added: "I don’t think it would be legal - there are papers and documents we certainly don’t have."

The mystery and anticipation surrounding Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ forthcoming nuptials is finally over, as their rep confirms the date of TomKat’s big day.

The date has finally been set for November 18 in Italy, with invites sent out to guests on October 20 requesting that they keep the weekend of November 16-19 free for the celebrations, according to Us Weekly magazine.

"All those details are correct," the couple’s rep, Arnold Robinson told the magazine, before adding that "proper security measures are being taken" to ensure the vows remain private.

Italian designer Giorgio Armani has also spoken to Us Weekly about his excitement at being asked to create Tom and Katie’s wedding wardrobe.

"When I am asked by a friend to make a wedding wardrobe, it goes straight to my heart," says the designer. "It really is an honour to play a small role in that milestone moment."

Katie, 27, and Tom, 44, have been engaged since June 2005 - which should have given Katie’s new best pal Victoria Beckham plenty of time to buy a new hat for what will undoubtedly be the wedding of the year.

Victoria Beckham has apparently been enlisted to help Katie Holmes plan her big day in Italy, though it seems that the hotly-anticipated event might not be happening at George Clooney’s pad after all.

Clooney’s rep has quashed rumours that the high-profile nuptial will take place at George’s Lake Como retreat, which features in Ocean’s Twelve, saying: "No weddings have taken place at [Clooney’s] villa and no weddings are scheduled to take place there."

And, it seems the wedding may be a tad delayed, with a source telling Us Weekly magazine that the style-conscious A-listers "needed more time" and "both want everything to be right".

Asked to confirm whether the wedding will still be happening in Italy in November, Cruise’s rep Arnold Robinson told the magazine: "I’m not denying that date or location."
