Katie was on her way to department store Target in the town and the officers escorted her inside and then followed her around the shop while she browsed for clothes.

Mrs Cruise’s spokesperson confirms: "The production office gave Katie the name of the chief of police and told her to call if she felt she needed it."

Since arriving in the small town, she has been besieged by snappers, desperate to catch her at work. The film - a heist comedy - is expected out some time next year.

Suri Cruise is one today. When the pretty baby was born a year ago, she was hidden from the glare of the world until September, when mum Katie Holmes and dad Tom Cruise posed for pictures with her in Vanity Fair.

Suri, who was born after months of publicity generated by the courtship of the Tinseltown duo, including Tom’s couch-hopping appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, was the first biological child for the War Of The Worlds actor, who has two adopted children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

"She has Kate’s lips and eyes," he said of Suri. "I think she looks like Kate."

"I think she has Tom’s eyes. I think she looks like Tom. She’s a glorious girl. She’s the miracle of our life," the former Dawson’s Creek actress added.

The baby has certainly had an eventful first 12 months - in November she was at the marriage of her parents in Bracciano, Italy, and she was even spotted with her dad at the Academy Awards rehearsals in February.

How family Cruise will be celebrating this milestone today we aren’t sure, but one thing’s certain - everyone wants an invite.

Actress Brooke Shields - whose daughter Grier was born on the same day as Suri - has said she wants a joint bash.

"We haven’t planned that yet. I think they’re going to be away for her birthday. So maybe it will happen after we get back," she said.

The 28-year-old mum-of-one is often seen out bending the plastic in LA’s finest boutiques.

Now she’s spent so much time at Beverly Hills retailer Neiman Marcus, she’s apparently reached the lofty heights of the store’s VIP status - the Chairman’s Circle.

Benefits include the glitzy store card, reports the Daily Star.

A friend is quoted as saying: "Katie probably spent close to a million dollars there last year. She’s earned the card."

We wonder if Katie’s newest LA pal Victoria Beckham may be in line for a matching card after she moves across the pond with hubby David?

The duo have been spotted out hitting the shops together and have become firm fashion friends.

No Dark Knight for Katie - Jan 29 2007
Katie Holmes has opted out of appearing in the second Batman movie.

The actress starred as Bruce Wayne’s (Christian Bale) love interest Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins, but will not reprise her role in the sequel, The Dark Knight.

However, her rep says it is because of timetabling difficulties, explaining: "Katie was offered [the movie] but was unable to accept the role because of scheduling conflicts. She was in the process of negotiating for another project. In addition, when she returns to work, she would like to tackle a new character."
