Kate wins charity payout over diet story - Mar 11 2007
Kate Winslet accepted a substantial donation to an eating disorder charity in settlement of her libel action over a claim that she visited a diet doctor.

The 31-year-old wasn’t at London’s High Court to hear her solicitor, Rachel Atkins, say the story in last month’s Grazia magazine caused her hurt and distress as well as damaging her reputation.

Ms Atkins said the article wrongly stated - albeit in good faith - the actress had approached a doctor for help with her weight, despite the fact she’s previously said she wouldn’t bow to Hollywood pressure of being skinny.

In the article, Dr Yi Pan discussed treatments he offered to A-listers at his Chinese Healing Institute in California.

Kate complained to the publisher, Emap London Lifestyle Ltd.

Atkins said Dr Pan did treat Kate but for a neck injury. She said Emap had agreed to apologise and to pay damages to a charity of Kate’s choice together with her costs.

The actress has said she was "delighted" the matter had been resolved.

"I’m not a hypocrite. I have always been, and shall continue to be, honest when it comes to body/weight issues," she said.

"Grazia magazine have apologised to me in full, and admitted that their story was incorrect, which gives me tremendous peace of mind.

"I feel very strongly that ’curves’ are natural, womanly and real."

She said she was donating the damages to an eating disorder charity.

In its apology, in its March 5 edition, Grazia said it had nothing but admiration for Kate, who had taken an "admirable stance" against the pressures on women to diet excessively.

Biography

Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born on October 05, 1975 in Reading UK. Kate is not the only actor in the Winslet family. Both of her sisters, Anna and Beth and her father and grandparents are or have worked as actors. Kate also has a younger brother Joss. Kate at the age 11 in 1986 began taking acting lessons in Maidenhead and she secured her first acting role in a Sugar Puffs advert dancing with the Honey Monster.

She continued in a performing arts school and followed graduation with roles in the British television drama Shrinks (1988), followed by appearances in the television series Casualty (1989), Dark Season (1991), Get Back (1992), and Anglo-Saxon Attitudes (1993) and theatrical roles including Pandora in the musical Adrian Mole, Wendy in Peter Pan, Sarah in A Game of Soldier, and Geraldine in What the Butler Saw.

Before she was a big movie star, Kate worked in a deli. She was actually in the middle of making a pastrami sandwich when she received the call that she’d been cast in the film "Heavenly Creatures." Kate Winslet got worldwide recognition when she was cast alongside side Leonardo Di Caprio to play ill fated lovers on board the Titanic, the film was a huge commercial success and won 11 Academy Awards.

She dated writer/actor Stephen Tredre for 4 and 1/2 years. The couple remained close even after their breakup. Sadly, Stephen died in 1997 after he lost his battle with cancer. Kate missed the U.S. premiere of "Titanic" to sing at his funeral in England. Kate also had a brief fling with fellow actor Rufus Sewell, however that all changed when Kate met and fell in love with Jim Threapleton, The couple met in 1997 on the set of "Hideous Kinky," where Jim was 3rd Assistant Director.

Kate married Jim Threapleton in 1998 they were married at the Anglican All Saints’ Church in Reading, near the Winslet family home, on November 22, 1998. Kate wore a beautiful white gown designed by Alexander McQueen, and the church was decorated with white and yellow roses. The ceremony was planned in absolute secrecy - not even the 170 guests knew the exact location! (This was in case any invitations happened to stray.)

They were told only to meet the carriages that would transport them to the church. The press didn’t get wind of the wedding until the very last minute, and they arrived just in time to catch some footage of Kate and Jim leaving the church. The wedding was followed by a reception at the Crooked Billet Pub, where the guests feasted on bangers and mash, a favourite dish of Kate’s. Later, the newlyweds headed off to their honeymoon on Scotland’s West Coast.

On October 12, 2000, Kate and Jim welcomed their first child, a little girl named Mia!
