The custody fight between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline will go another round next year.

A court commissioner made no changes to the couple’s custody arrangements after a 90-minute hearing behind closed doors on Tuesday. He postponed a scheduled January hearing to February.

Neither Federline nor Spears, 26, were in court while their lawyers argued the case.

Spears and Federline have been wrangling for months over the custody of their sons, two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James.

Federline, 29, has temporary custody because Spears, who has limited visitation rights, has defied court orders.

Sorrell Trope, Spears’ lawyer, declined to comment after the hearing. Federline’s lawyer was still in court and not immediately available for comment.

Spears and Federline, who were married in 2004, have been in court repeatedly about custody since they split.

Their divorce was final in July.

Britney Spears has failed to appear at a scheduled meeting in her ongoing child custody dispute with former husband Kevin Federline, saying she did not feel well.

News media and paparazzi were waiting for the singer to arrive at attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan’s office.

But Kaplan, Federline’s attorney, said he had been told that Spears was not coming.

Kaplan said he was told Britney did not feel well and that she would give her court-ordered testimony at a later date.

Spears and Federline have been arguing for months over custody of their sons, two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James.

Child welfare investigators are looking into "multiple child abuse and neglect" allegations in the custody battle between US pop star Britney Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline, according to court documents.

In a request to unseal parts of the case file, an attorney for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services wrote that there are concerns about the safety and welfare of the two toddlers, Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, if they are left in their mother’s care.

Though the agency mentioned investigating referrals relating to K-Fed, the documents do not provide details.

After-hours calls to attorneys representing Britney and K-Fed were not immediately returned.

At the weekend, Britney celebrated her 26th birthday with both of her sons.

The star has also just filmed the video for her new track Piece Of Me, taken from her album Blackout, in Los Angeles.

Britney Spears celebrated her birthday rather sedately - there were no tabletop dancing, no near-naked frolics in the sea and no outfit swaps.

The singer, who turned 26 on Sunday, was joined by hotel heiress Paris Hilton, best friend Sam Lufti, and cousin Alli Sims at the party on Saturday at the Scandinavian Style Mansion in Bel Air, Hollywood.

The birthday girl, who sported long blonde hair extensions, blew out candles on a small round chocolate cake as the handful of guests sang Happy Birthday.

"She was smiling and looked really happy," a partygoer told OK!

The group then continued partying at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, where Paris was spotted leaving just before 4am.

While it may have been devoid of bizarre antics, it was a night to remember for Brits who received several leather and fur coats, including a $25,000 silver fox fur coat that she wore throughout the night.
