Her performance was a rarity given the star’s recent health problems. She ended up cancelling her UK tour after several shambolic performances, citing husband Blake Fielder-Civil - who is being held in custody - as the reason she could not go on.

But after winning the five awards, she hugged several people, including her mother Janis, as the crowd chanted: "Amy, Amy, Amy."

The singer put her arm around her mother and added: "To my mum and dad. To my Blake, my Blake incarcerated."

Amy’s US visa application rejected - Feb 8 2008

Amy Winehouse will not perform at the Grammy Awards because her US visa application has been rejected.

The Back To Black star - currently in rehab for drug addiction - had been invited to sing at the event this Sunday. She has been nominated for six awards.

But the US Embassy in London turned down her application.

A spokesman for the star said: "Amy Winehouse will not be performing at this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony.

"Unfortunately, her application for a visa to enter the United States of America has been rejected at this time by the American Embassy in London.

"Amy has been progressing well since entering a rehabilitation clinic two weeks ago and although disappointed with the decision has accepted the ruling and will be concentrating on her recovery.

"Amy has been treated well and fairly by the Embassy staff and thanks everyone for their support in trying to make this happen. There will of course be other opportunities and she very much looks forward to visiting America in the near future."

The 24-year-old singer attended a meeting with embassy officials on Monday, accompanied by her lawyer.

In addition to her current well-documented addiction problems - she entered rehab on January 24 after a video emerged of her apparently smoking crack cocaine - she was arrested and fined in Norway last October for possession of cannabis.

Amy’s six Grammy nominations include Record of the Year for Rehab.

Amy questioned over ’crack’ video - Feb 6 2008
Singer Amy Winehouse has been questioned in connection with a video which allegedly showed her smoking crack cocaine.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said officers from Tower Hamlets had interviewed a 24-year-old woman in connection with an allegation of unlawful possession of a controlled drug.

He said she was not arrested, but was interviewed under caution and inquiries were continuing.

Last month footage obtained by the Sun appeared to show Winehouse inhaling fumes from a crack pipe after an alleged 19-minute drugs binge in which she snorted ecstasy and cocaine and admitted to downing six Valium.

The disturbing images were said to have been filmed during a party at Winehouse’s east London home, hours before she attended a court hearing for husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

He is awaiting trial on charges of assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The Back to Black star is now in rehab, admitting herself to the Capio Nightingale clinic in north London on January 24 days after the video appeared.

On February 4 the singer took a break from her treatment to apply for a US visa so she could attend the Grammys in Los Angeles on February 10, where she is nominated for six awards.

The application process will not be simple due to her drugs record. Last October she was arrested and fined in Norway for possession of cannabis.

Biography

Amy Winehouse hails from Osidge Lane, Southgate, although she currently lives in Camden. She is being feted as the new big thing with a voice likened to soul artists of the caliber of American soul queen Erykah Badu.

Amy and her brother Alex were brought up by her mum and grandmother, and fondly remembers ’Growing up in East Finchley was cool.’ She started playing guitar at 12 and listening to jazz. Her acceptance into the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School seemed to spell big things for Amy, although she was expelled at 15, apparently for getting her nose pierced. She carried on her studies at an all girls school in Mill Hill, which she hated as there were no fella’s there.

Amy made appearances with the Youth Jazz Orchestra, produced a demo tape of jazz covers that was picked up by Universal/Island Records, and they signed her almost immediately. She released her album Frank in October 2003 and supported Jamie Callum on his national tour. Amy then went on to be nominated for two Brit Awards, British Female Solo Artist and Best Urban Artist. Not bad for a girl of 20!
