i went to the standard it was the best chikking tetar mssarler ever the man in the paper shop said mr bedun the old man has retierd
I am in deep mourning for the loss of the Standard. :(. The food was always lovely, the service idiosyncratic and the atmosphere unashamedly stuck somewhere in the late 1970's. I for one loved it and was looking forward to eating there for ever! The loss of the Standard is tragic. I too would give anything to know where the chefs were now working. Westbourne Grove is the poorer for the loss of the Standard. Won't someone change their minds and bring it back?
What a tragedy. I have been going there for the past 40 years. The food has always been reliably good and decently priced. OK they used to add a 10% tip to the bill which wasn't so obvious so you could have tipped twice, but the food was so good.
I was really sad when I realized that the restaurant is to close forever. I was hoping that they were just refurbishing or something like it. This was the restaurant where I would take away almost every week
Alas, the Standard is no more. The owners have retired and their heirs apparant have declined the opportunity to continue the tradition. If anyone knows where the chefs have gone please let me know.
One of my favourite Curry houses and totally unpretentious and good value for money but I noticed it has closed down since around November 2007. Does anyone know what has happened and if it will be reopening in the same location or somewhere else?
I've eaten here many times and have never had a bad experience. The service is great, the food outstanding and the prices very reasonable. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a good Indian meal.
We just came back from a Saturday night visit at the Standard. We arrived around 8:30pm to a busy restaurant. At least three larger tables were still available but the person showing us only offered a small table right next to another one already occupied by two people in a tiny room of three tables (where the third would have been a much more obvious choice to give a couple a bit of privacy). Ten minutes later another couple arrived and as the guy made a bit more of a fuss he was given the larger table. Whilst listening to every word the other two people next to us said, we chose a chicken dansak and a mixed grill as mains. The grill had a single lonely prawn and the dansak came with a crust usually seen on dishes that waited a bit too long on the counter. The grumpy waiters came around twice (once to take the order and once to deliver it) and gave themselves a 10% tip at the end for the effort. The food was a lot poorer than any other Indian restaurant we've been to, although admittedly cheap for 27 pounds for two drinks and two mains. We left as soon as possible and are not planning to come back. Standard Indian? Sub-standard more likely!
We have been to many Indian restaurant in London and Standard has so far always kept their "standards" high. Highly recommended!
"There's a reason that this place has been here for almost half a century- It's truely excellent. The food tastes really fresh and how ever hot you like your curry the flavours of the herbs and spices really define each dish. The food on offer is primarily curry, and I haven't had a disapiontment yet. The drinks are by no means from haut caves but accompany the cuisine more than adequately. The service is punctual and polite, and despite there being quite a big team on the floor when you're not in need of attention - you'd hardly notice them. There's nothing that cuts it quite like a Lamb Bhuna, Saag Aloo, Peshwari Naan and a Pilau Rice from the Standard!
