I used to live on the Quayside and visited this place regularly. What some of the reviews say about the antipasto are right - this isn't a good option. Also, the service is brusque, but I quite like that. The front room is reasonably pleasant, nothing remarkable, but usually busy and noisy. The back room is somehow hollowed out of the railway bridge, which makes it a bit different, but it actually feels like you're eating in a cellar, and I prefer the front. However, what I like about Prima is that it's quick, cheap, and has some of the best pizza in town. Pizza di Parma is especially good, in my view. I also had a chicken main here once - it was simple, tasty, and very good.

I booked a table here for me and my friends on Saturday. Not knowing Newcastle very well I thought this looked a good place as we were a Hen party and the restaurant supposedly had a good atmosphere. We arrived and were taken upstairs to what can only be described as a dinner hall with empty long tables. There were hardly any of the tables full and so it lacked atmosphere. The waiter was very droll with no chat although to be fair he did take a photo of us when asked. On the up side the food was excellent - everyone commented on how good their meal was.I think if you want to go to this restaurant request a table downstairs as we would have much preferred to be there as it was busier and would have had more atmosphere which would have made our meal so much more pleasurable.

After visiting Prima on Friday 29.8.08 i feel i must post this review. The experience was awful !!!Firstly, After being tempted in "with the last table for two" we were seated in a corner, behind a group of intoxicated women. Not a good start. A surley waiter, with the bald head, eventually came and took our order and preceded to explain to me that fries are the same as chips, thanks for the lesson. He left, still unsmiling. Our starter arrived, within mintes of taking the order, Antipasto....it was OK. Lets face it what can go wrong with that meal ? Things were looking good. Main meals then arrived very quickly, Linguine Paulo and Chicken Kiev with fries/chips. The Linguine Paulo looked good, apart from the fact there was hardly any pasta to go with the meat. This is a strange complaint i know because the plate was full of chicken and bacon in sauce - and nothing else. The meal would have been better complimented if there had been more pasta. Consequently the meal was poor and lacked any variety of tastes.Notwithstanding on this problem of no pasta, i was still waiting for the fries/chips to arrive with my Chicken Kiev. Now i understand restaurants having to prepare meals, especially on busy times like the Friday night we visited but.....to present to me a meal that must have been warmed up via a microwave is not acceptable. The Kiev was red hot and swimming in garlic butter, the salad accompianment on the plate was saturated with this oily mixture and was just a mess. The chips arrived after 10 minutes, when they did land they were undercooked but must have been staight out of the frier/microwave as they were boiling hot.Furthermore, the water service was poor. After our meals had been served no drinks or condiments service were offered with our meal.In these times of a credit crunch where money does not go as far as you would like the expierence of paying 35+ for a meal for two which was substandard really gets to me. Ultimately, Prima will carry on trading in the future but without my custom and i urge any readers of this rant to be wary of visiting this restaurant, especially in busy periods.

I took some work colleages there on a Monday night and would like to complement them on their excellent bistro menu. It offered an excellent alternative from the normal menu at great value for money.
