I was at Jakes late on Thursday 4th Dec. I've been a few times before and thought it okay. Not as good as Aporto or Elbow Rooms, but better than suffering at Revolution. Now, when its getting late (0:30) I don't want to be stood at the bar waiting for over ten minutes as two buffoons do their best Tom Cruise impressions behind the bar. It wasn't the fact that they were clearly in love with themselves, it wasn't the way they were recklessly firing beer bottle tops left right and centre. It was the fact they were poncing around high fiving and back slapping each other rather than serving people. When the dopey looking one (the other looked like a reject from Hollyoaks) finally asked what I wanted, I suddenly realised that the stupid grin had been wiped off from his face as he was no longer serving a young women. In fact between the two of them they served every girl before me regardless who had been stood scowling the longest.
Don't get me wrong, I understand Jakes bar prides itself on it's cocktails. It's just the decent majority don't want to be stood watching the chuckle brothers down shooters, practice their dance routines before they nearly have someones eye out with the over zealous use of a bottle opener.
Eatery by day, children welcome. Bar by night, everyone welcome.
Sunday night seemed to be Tequila night from what I can remember. Jake’s drinks are reasonably priced from £2.75 per beer bottle and £13 for a wine bottle. I certainly made my money back at the end of the night when the bar man stood on the bar pouring tequila down my throat. Unfortunately I couldn’t get salt and lemon down at the same time but it’s something I’m working on. There’s no real smoking facilities so you’re out on the street and the bouncers aren’t very friendly so try to go outside with a friend.
The DJ concentrates on indie music and classic chart songs. Think Kings of Leon, Led Zeppelin and maybe Madonna with the odd bit of Hip Hop mixed in.
It’s underground with no obvious disabled access and looks much like a cellar with comfy sofas and a dance floor that is heaving. It has a great atmosphere with lovely people but it’s hot and sweaty, so maybe not a date place. I can’t write this with out mentioning how great the bar staff, they are so friendly and I even got a free shot as I waited to be served for a while.
Opening hours: Sunday-Thursday 12.00-2.00am Friday and Saturday 12.00- 03.00

Awful door staff, but great bar. If it wasn't for the wicked tunes I would avoid it on principle of being offended by them once too often. I don't reckon I'm alone in this, annoying.
Seriously, why would anybody give this place a bad review - it rocks, great staff, the odd free shot if you have been waiting too long at the bar, and nobody cares how you look or who you are (Chavs and Townies need not apply) Who care if its 6.20 for two beers, go find somewhere decent in town that is cheaper and I'll buy the round! Build a bridge and get on to their excellent cocktails!!
