Within striking distance of Upper Street and the Islington throngs, The Embassy Bar has it’s Essex road location and effortless cool to thank for its ability to stave off the hoards of stag and hen nights and typical N1 punters.
It is a gem of an establishment, contrasting Victorian indulgence with seventies style, serving up superior cocktails and beers, by the friendliest management and staff.
Quality music comes in the form of DJs from Thursday through to Saturday, seeing both ground floor and basement transform with all the qualities of a late night club.
The busy Embassy calendar has not only internationally renowned DJs but also includes monthly live music slots for up and coming and established artists alike. Records courtesy of neighbours Haggle Vinyl, line the top of the horseshoe shaped bar, flocked red and gold wallpaper lines the walls, black leather studded seats and sofas ensure customer comfort. Grand chandeliers hang from the ceiling and flamboyant palms and flower arrangements set off the tone.
Downstairs is entirely different though not uncomplimentary, and more sets the scene of a ’70’s lounge with its veneer paneling and brown leather upholstery. The bar smacks of serious love and care from current owners Frank Lambe and Adam Hill, who took over one of their favourite drinking holes when it came up for sale, and transformed it into what it is today.
"We made some sweeping changes such as the chandeliers and giving the place a touch of intimacy. Really it was all about giving lots of TLC".
I used to like the Embassy, but my has it changed. during my last two visits there were issues with our drinks. One the first occasion, they had clearly put something cheaper in to the bottle they were serving from. Last time, they served me a vodka and cranberry sans vodka, and a whisky sour that somehow managed to be clear. When I confronted the bartender, she insisted that nothing was amiss. Either they pulled a fast one, or the owners are watering down the stock in the bottles.

Don't be put off by the decor of Embassy, I know it looks like a dull and dinghy old place but it really is a lot of fun. The clientele are great, the trendy Islington types that want to avoid the onslaught of chain bars like Pitcher and Piano and have somewhere to keep for themselves. Not cheap but fun and funky
