Thoroughly upmarket in the most trendy of ways is the modular status of life, a bar restaurant combination halfway between old street and farringdon on the old street road. The reataurant is rather minimalist, a scattering of tables, high ceilings and neat wooden tables on which are served fine warmed sake and a delight of sushi and Japanese cuisine which probably looks better than it tastes.
Having said this the grilled mackerel main course is fantastic and several curiosities keep this place memorable. Perhaps its the star wars characters looking quite out of place in the tall glass windows. Perhaps its the waiting staff who are modelled in retro new classic items of high fashion, in front of whom you feel like you are dining badly. Or perhaps the soy desert which left many in our party with upturned smiles.
Overall a very interesting and different place to grab a meal. A very reasonable price for lunch but a little too strange for some .
Great food, great atmosphere, incredible all around. I go there regularly (I'm a local) and have never been disappointed.
wow that sounds like a bad experience, but I think the guy you are taking about must have been sacked as all the staff including the bar manager I met recently have been very nice and friendly. The bar staff chop and change frequently in places like that so must be different now. A great bar with a great choice of Japanese drinks.
I love the sushi from LIFE, which has always of a very high quality. The sushi take away is probably more than you would typically spend for lunch (between 5 and 7 pounds) however knocks the socks off a baguette from Prt.
Dunno what that guy/girl is ranting about with the drinking up time - yes it shuts early and yes you do only get the legal 15 minutes drinking up time, but those people have homes to go to. The cost of a pint in Life is 2, half the cost of anywhere else, so you could have just left your half and been no worse off. Get over it
