A group of 5 of us ate at Base last night 26-04-08. The waiting staff were poor, un attentive and dropped items on and around the table several times. The menu which seems fairly straightforward seemed not to be understood by the staff. We were refused potatoes with our mains even though the menu clearly states that main meat courses are served with a choice of sides one of which is potatoes. The menu is varied but let down by the quality of cooking. The duck and cod were overcooked, dry and bland. The desert was not much better, crepes were served cold. When we refused to pay the automatically included 12.5% service charge we were grilled quite aggressively by a member of staff. A thoroughly disappointing experience at a restaurant we picked because it had been strongly reviewed by others.
By some margin BASE provide the best quality cooking in Hampstead, and is in a different league from the other restaurants nearby. All the food is freshly prepared on site, with a wide choice of pasta, fish, meats, salads and other interesting mediterannean inspired dishes. The restaurant itself is small and intimate which makes it ideal for a quiet romantic evening out, and although it is packed solid every lunchtime, we can usually get a table most evenings (except saturdays) without having made a reservation in advance. We particularly enjoy the wine list, where they apply a modest fixed mark-up on their wines making the better bottles particularly good value.
Very good restaurant with authentic dishes from France and the Medditerrean. Highly recommended as the atmosphere is intimateand freindly.
