The idea of a salad in the midst of winter is never the first thing that springs to mind for some good sustenance. This, however, might all be about to change. Arriving at Tossed on the balcony of the famous Westfield shopping centre we were greeted by a friendly server who gave us an extensive menu and we got busy planning our salad. Looking at the menu we could either create our own salad mix or go with one of their creations. Looking at the wide-ranging selection of bits we thought we would be in safer hands choosing from the ready made set. I opted for the Sweet Chilli Chicken which was an eclectic mix of chicken, jalapeño pepper, tortilla chips, cheddar cheese, red onions, and kidney beans with a low fat sweet chilli sauce. My missus went for the more upmarket grilled salmon fillet with sun-blushed tomatoes, red onion, capers, roast potatoes and green beans drizzled with honey and lemon dressing.
We sat down with a bottle of the Prosecco dei Colli Trevigiani, a lovely, dry sparkling wine, and watched the Westfield’s comings and goings. When our dishes arrived my eyes bulged as they had not skimped on the size. It was enough to feed two, but on this day they had caught me on a ravenous moment and I practically inhaled it. The dish itself was delicious and I felt like I was enjoying a Thai stroke Mexican experience which, I think, really illustrated how much thought had gone into the combination. Once I had licked the plate clean I was ready to pick at the wife’s plate, as she was enjoying hers at a more sensible speed. The Salmon, grilled with flawless precision, was eye wateringly good with a more generic base to it that balanced out the tender meat without overpowering the senses.
For desert we had a Berry Punch smoothie and a yogurt pot with berries and granola which was the icing on the cake. For me this whole salad thing was an eye opener as I was previously unaware that I could eat so much and walk away feeling satisfied and yet not listless. Since that evening my one sided perception of salad has changed for the better. Much appreciated!
I checked out the new shopping centre after all the hype. I have to say, I was quite impressed. Bright, airy and fresh compared against some of the other centres. THere is a small food court on the first floor that has lots of different options (and no fast food!). Here we found Tossed which basically does loads of salads, wraps, smoothies. I think there were soups and stews, but I didn't have any. I had the Tossed Signature Salad which had chicken, sundried cranberries, mozzarella, cashews, apple and grapes in with a Champagne Raspberry dressing....mmmmmmm! It was the best salad I have ever eaten and so fresh. My Bfriend went for the Mexican salad as advised by the helpful "tosser" (it was on her t shirt so its not me calling her that!). He couldn't finish it, it was that big. He loved it though (and he's a non salad eater).
We both had a smoothie too, which took us back to our times in Australia.
Its good to find some proper healthy food that actually fills you up for a change.
