The Vortex is a marvellous venue

Big disappointment, after all the build up. Basically a concrete bunker which happens to play great music. The genuine atmosphere and excitement of a night here can all be attributed to the excellent bands booked, not at all to the design, which seems to have been put together to create minimum comfort. Hard backed schoolroom chairs, blank walls in an inhospitable oblong shape, trestle table bar with crap stock. Once the last note was played we couldn't get out of there fast enough. Like the Hackney Empires horrible bar, a bar designed by people who dont go to bars. For musos only.

Excellent value for money, a group of us from work decided to go there for a night out, good sound and a wonderful intimate atmosphere, this little jazz club is relaxed and welcome to all types, young, trendy, seasoned jazz fans. While there is a small bar it is not a bar as such, people come here to listen to the music, so do not go there to drink and chat alone. Why anyone should do this when the quality of the music is so high is beyond me. My only criticism is that the toilet facilities in the main club could be better, three unisex toilets only.
