I live near the Spread Eagle, which is the flagship restaurant of an American entrepreneur who has settled in Greenwich, bought many of the local pubs and restaurants, and is not afraid to spend money improving them, as is evident as soon as you enter. The walls are covered with his exceptional collection of locally themed paintings and engravings. Diners can ask for an expensively produced catalogue describing them and take a copy away with them if they wish. Oh, and the food is pretty good too. My only caveat is that I'm not sure Greenwich has the critical mass needed to support a restaurant of this quality outside central London. Fortunately making money from it does not seem to have been the owner's priority when re-opening this restaurant.
I'm really surprised that this restaurant doesn't have a higher rating. Ive been here a couple of times and always had a good time and enjoyed the food. While it's not got the stars, the food is as well prepared as at Galvin's/Maze/Boxwood etc. The service can be a little slow when they are busy but the food has always been good and worth the wait.
My only grip would be that the menu doesn't change very often (twice a year I think) but it is good food and the wine list is great. If the menu chnaged more often this place would definately get a 5 from me.
Had an awful experience here for Sunday lunch. The waiting staff were rude and inattentive - I had to get up and search for a waitress in order get the wine list. The mediocre food comes in the smallest portion I have seen in any restaurant anywhere in the world.Unless you like pretentious places that rip you off - avoid at all costs.
