Hey,
me and a friend are planning to come from newcastle area to either Glasgow or Edinburgh, but we were just wondering which would be the best for night outs and a meal and also where a hotel was near to the bars?!

Oh and is it dead expensive?
Thanks :)

Hi Emily!

I know I'm a little biased when it comes to this discussion, but I'm going to suggest you come to Glasgow because, let's face it, it's kind of my job!

Glasgow is a great place for nights out - you've got so much choice and the atmosphere is second to none in my fair city :)

So, in terms of restaurants, there are a number of lovely places worthy of mention. If you fancy some posh pub grub, I'd head into the west end and hit Ashton Lane for The Loft (HUGE converted cinema building), Brel (Glasgow's first Belgian bar/restaurant and amazing for mussels), or the Ubiquitous Chip (good old fashioned Scottish grub - it's where you'll find any celebrity dining out during a visit to Glasgow). If you fancy Indian food, Balbir's on Church Street is fantastic (try the tandoori salmon - I don't know why it works, but it does). In the city centre, Ichiban on Queen Street is wonderful for Japanese food, sushi included, and their bento boxes are really good value as well.

For bars, I'd either stay in Ashton Lane for a few under the pretty fairy lights, or head to the Merchant City area. There are so many bars there you might find it hard to choose, but I can definitely recommend Home for a really eclectic mix of music, cocktails and crowd. Or, if you're looking for something more special, I'd go for Arta - the Mediterranean themed bar on the ground floor is gorgeous. Closer to the main stretch of bars/clubs, Sauchiehall Street, there's Bunker, Budda and Firewater - all great and lively places at the weekend.

As for Clubs, it all depends on what you're in the mood for. If you're up for a student-style night with lots of Indie and Chart music then I'd head to ABC - it's the biggest club in Glasgow and the disco ball alone is worth seeing (you'll see what I mean). If you're looking for a more unusual night, and are feeling particularly funky, head to Buff Club (this one I'll tell you is in Bath Lane, hidden away, because it's a toughie to find!). Buff Club is a small, retro-themed venue with lots of funk and soul to get you dancing. If however you're more of a dance club bunny, the Arches is a good idea - it's a legendary venue and you should grab a chance to see it. Finally, if you're up for a good laugh and not out on the pull that night, I'd head for Polo Lounge, the best gay club in the city. Cheesy music, fabulous cocktails and no ogling - sometimes it's just what you need!

Finally, in terms of hotels, I'd look around to make sure you get a good price, but there are plenty of Travelodges and Holiday Inns around should you fancy the cheaper option. The Travelodge on Hill Street is really central, and the Premier Inn at George Square is central to the best shops, as well as being at the start of the Merchant City.

I hope all this helps, and that you have a wonderful night out in Glasgow, should you decide to come :)
And remember, reviews are always appreciated around here, should you enjoy any of the places you visit!

oh, how can you ask such a question...its like beauty, its in the eye of the beholder, visit them both !!

If you only go to one, 9 out 10 cats would go to Edinburgh, its easier to get to from Newcastle.

Truth is you will love either. If you need a hotel in Edinburgh these guys are good, tell them you are Brian's mate and they will do a good deal for you

later ..... xx

thank you everyone for the replies.
sian, id reccomend the follwoing
a night called brighton beach, it's on the last saturday of every month at newcastle's university union and it's pretty cool.
If your into the more rockier side of things id reccomend a place called Krash
(i couldnt tell you whereabouts they are coz i cant find my way round newcastle sober, nevermind after a few drinks :P)
A place called digital, it usually has a fair few good bands on.

theres loads more,
but im from durham so im usually out there, and if you're going there i'd suggest
Lloyds Bar Huuge bar, usually gets packed at the weekend, id suggest going on a friday night
Market Vaults underneath durhams market place, really dark, plays some cheese and is a really fun bar, people usually had there round 9ish as the place is usually pretty empty til about then.
Studio on north road, has a rock night on friday then just plays eveyrhting ona sat, has a good night sponsored by the local magazine on a thursday.

:)
reckon we're going to glasgow now :) thanks alot x

And Glasgow wins!
(as some may be able to tell, there's an element of competiveness between the two cities :P)

Enjoy your trip Emily, let me know how it goes!
