New sculptures in wood by Alison Crowther will be exhibited in the Lobby this autumn. She is known for her seating made in English oak where she works with the wood following its grain and making use of the natural interruptions in its surface teasing them into swirling and rippling lines that embrace the form. Crowther applies the same approach to her sculptures but allows herself freedoms beyond the practicalities she needs to consider when making functional items. Her sculptural compositions are based in the geometry of nature, and within the inherent characteristics of her chosen material, which she allows to lead her to the final form, and inspires the sense of fun that she creates in the detail.
