Annies

Nearest Transport: Kentish Town West / National Railway

Annies is the Marie-Antoinette-style reincarnation of a brightly-coloured, barely-lit, male-dominated Irish pub formerly known as Auntie Annies Porterhouse. It’s unlikely that many of the previous regulars will patronise what is now a rather girly lounge bar, complete with cute drinks menu, fancy wallpaper, oversized chandelier and a nostalgic play list featuring the likes of Tom Waits, Ella Fitzgerald, Buena Vista Social Club and Gotan Project. Not that it matters, because Annies is already busy with an entirely new set of customers – the kitsch-starved women of Kentish Town. The almost inappropriately elegant atmosphere appears to go down a treat. Not to mention the marble loos with fresh flowers, hair straighteners and scented hand lotion. Female touches and baroque flourishes abound; heavy gold trimmings, a white baby grand piano, stucco-encrusted cream ceilings, brocade-covered seats, a champagne-heavy drinks menu. It’s all a little OTT, but maybe that’s exactly what Kentish Town needs? Somewhere to go when one has had enough of sweaty gigs, music nerds and old men’s watering holes. Someone plays the baby grand on Friday and Saturday nights and a modern basement lounge area will open soon.

Down the Camden road away from Kentish town station you find yourself and there you see Aunt Annie’s. A cool sounding name but it looks like a rustic badly painted yellow buildinglaid clumsily at the side of the road. Within- a homely enclosed and dominantly male Irish run pub.

There is no music early on and it is quite dark but it does get busy without becoming rowdy. At the bar there is a very good variety on offer including over 30 special Irish whiskey’s although the staff themselves are rather rude and the prices aren’t much to brag about at £3 a pint, definitely too expensive for what it is. Girls in particular aren’t going to feel welcome in this pub and its also not for the young at heart with the average age being about 40.

Overall I enjoyed myself as a bloke but it really lets the girls down and thus gets an evened out mark of 2.5.

The decor is really OTT they must of spent a fortune on the curtains alone. However, this is a great place to bring your mom and pops or the in-laws for a drink if your restricted to bars in the Kentish Town area. where you are limted to any decent bars on this stretch of road. Give it a try!

This bar has since closed and re-opened as a stylish upmarket bar, which from a local point of view, has been needed! Hey let's hope a few more like this open, smarten up the area and lift house prices!
