As pub trips goes, you can forget wizened floorboards, tawdry sofas and even lax service at the modish Mansion. Highly ornate in setting, Mansion is no ordinary pub fix. Settled in quaint Gipsy Hill, Mansion is compacted with chirpy staff, mouth watering menus and an appetising wine list.
With a healthy load of punters busily nattering on a dreary Tuesday, we ponder over the menu. Far from the conventional dishes, Mansion centres itself on atypical dishes. For starters the ‘Lincolnshire Poacher’ Cheese Tarlet and the Deep Fried Whitebaits were on call. Grand in size, our Cheese Tarlet was flavoursome and prominent in taste. Soon after, a generous platter of Whitebaits surfaces – crisply prepared and laden with freshly squeezed lemon.
Despite our surly defeat at their pub quiz, we move on to our main courses. The enlightening Glamorgan (homemade) Sausages beckoned, alongside their Fish Pie. The Glamorgan Sausages proved to be no chore - a poignant melange of leek and Caerphilly cheese bedded on Spinach and sprinkled with tomatoes was a daring but delicious concoction. The Fish Pie, a plumping option was a potpourri of smoked haddock, salmon and prawns accompanied by buttered green beans.
Having wadded through our main dishes, sampled a bottle of Valpolivella Classico and braved through our desserts, an exceptional Cherry, Sherry Chocolate Trifle, layered with thick cream and soaked in an alcoholic array, we suddenly realised… regardless of the housing market slump, this Mansion is one of affordable heights.
