Brendan Collins took over the Rainbow in July 2005 and is working hard to turn it into a space where all kinds of things can be developed by folks with ideas.
His hard work has paid off nicely - the Rainbow is swiftly becoming the most talked about venue in Birmingham, hosting unique and very popular events every week. Maybe the new hype can be accounted for by the huge variety of different promoters, DJ’s and bands they’re welcoming.
There are regular spots, but the schedule is changeable enough to provide a different experience almost every time you go. Popular residencies include Future Jazz and Funkbox on a Thursday, Munchbreak (nine-piece live funk band) and Concious Sound (ska, roots and hip hop) on a Friday, and Silver dollar and Klub Catusi ("soul bongo fury and Las Vegas grind") on a Saturday.
For those of us who care about decent music and local talent, this place is a Godsend. Maybe it’s the atmosphere inside. Birmingham, like every other major city, is becoming swamped with chain bars and theme pubs and the Rainbow provides some sanctuary. There’s no pretence here - the music policy and the crowd maybe cutting edge but everyone’s keen to get along, and you don’t pay bar prices for a pint either.
The big back yard is a great place to chill out, grab some barbecue and feel like part of the family. If you haven’t been there already you really should go. No need to rush though - The Rainbow’s is now a much-loved part of Digbeth, and looks set to stay that way for a very long time.
Can someone tell me how big this venue is please? i'm going to a gig here

Mediocre is a good way to describe this place. Some say its unpretentious, I say plain lazy.
Go here if you don't mind spending your money in a place whose apperance suggests a previous life as an abandoned crack house and if you don't mind the downright foul BO smell that seems to accompany many of the patrons. Graffiti all over the walls, stained floors and surrounded by abandoned buildings. Not my idea of a great night out.
Wicked place - best pub in Birmingham. If you're looking for an alternative to the drab, generic, faceless chain pubs in the city then The Rainbow is the place to go. Great music, friendly faces, outdoor spaces too. What more do you want.
An excellent pub which holds a great variety of nights not on offer elsewhere in the city.
The courtyard area is great all year round. Summer all day parties like Hott Date are made better by the fact that you can sit and catch some rays, while the retractable roof and heating come on in the Winter to keep us warm.
In my opinion, even better than the Rainbow pub is the Rainbow Warehouse. You'll find this massive space a little further down Addeley Street, and although it is just an old converted warehouse the atmosphere at the events I have been too there have been electric!
Outside this warehouse the area was transformed into Birmingham's very own beach complete with 40 tonnes of sand, deckchairs and an ice cream van. 'Fun Times club' which was held here every Wednesday was definitely one of the highlights of my week over the Summer.
Now Winter's arrived I'm told the beach has been replaced with 'The Garden' - definitely one to check out!
