As Beijing handed over the Olympic flag to London Mayor Boris Johnson a nation held its breath – how will we EVER compete with that?

In my opinion the shuffling Boris, all crumpled suit and wild hair coupled with our slightly less impressive red London bus (why not the bendy version?), break dancing umbrella carriers and electric guitar rock out from Jimmy Page set against the falsely polished performance of the Chinese committee set the scene perfectly.

We may not have our stadiums finished, it may pee it down for fourteen days straight and we may well spend most of it waiting for a tube train that never arrives but London 2012 will be quirky and fun with tongue firmly in cheek.

We are now officially the Olympic city…so what can we expect?  How do you feel about your capital being taken over by 2012?  Got an opening ceremony idea to pitch or a new sport you’d like to see introduced (the 400 metre binge drink anyone?).

Have your say here…

At the moment I think it will be great for this area of East London. Stratford and the surrounding communities have suffered from neglect over the past half a century - this should turn things around.

It's up to the management of the Games to make sure 2012 is a memorable event with a lasting legacy. Here's hoping....

I don't know about the 2012 Olympics benefiting London, but I know I am still trying to think of some sort of dragons den style idea to make the Olympics benefit me in some way!

Good to hear at least that the site will get some use after the event. If West Ham put a stadium there its less likely that the village will fall in to sad disrepair. Empty like Barcalona or a national symbol of hilarity a la the Dome.I hope that in the face of all the negativity the London Olympics will leave a worthwhile legacy in the shape of new sporting facilities and training for kids. Perhaps they could also use the non-stadium buildings for community projects.

As East London is dug up and the unmarked graves of gangsters marks are disturbed, we prepare to host the Olympics. Ok, I know I live 40 miles away from the main Olympic sites, but i'm not a million miles away from Bisley, where i'm sure the shooting will be staged. Or will that just be in the streets outside the athletics stadium? I'm joking!! Debates still rage as to whether this Olympics is going to benefit London at all. Latest news is that one of the new stadiums built at great expense will be demolished within months of its use, to be replaced with a Premiership football ground (West Ham). Waste of money? Sounds it. The tax payer funds an Olympic village, only for an arab billionaire to knock it down and start again. Already there is no pride in London hosting. The euphoria of the announcement in Trafalger Square long gone. After the farce that was the building of Wembley that went hugely over budget, i'm very sceptical that we can deliver this within the funds permitted. Don't get me wrong, i want it to be a success, but i can't help feel that it won't be. If they are kicking people out of their homes and business' to build facilities, it doesn't seem worth it to me.
